Why Wales is So Good for Walking
People often arrive here with a plan to “do a few walks.”
What sometimes happens is they end up doing a lot more than that.
There’s something about Wales that makes walking feel easy to slip into. You don’t need to be a serious hiker or have a list of routes saved on your phone. You just step outside and start.
Here in Llanthony, the valley does most of the work for you.
You Can Just Head Out
One of the nicest things about staying here is that you don’t need to drive anywhere to begin.
You open the door, walk past the fields, and you’re already in it. Lanes turn into paths, paths turn into hills, and before you know it you’re properly out in the landscape.
Some people head straight up into the Black Mountains. Others wander down to Llanthony Priory and take their time getting back.
There’s no right way to do it.
The Views Change Constantly
Walking here never feels repetitive.
One minute you’re tucked into the valley with trees and hedgerows around you, the next you’re up high looking out across miles of countryside.
The weather plays its part as well. Light moves across the hills, clouds drift through, and the whole place shifts throughout the day.
You can walk the same route twice and it won’t feel the same.
It Doesn’t Feel Busy
Some walking spots feel like you’re joining a queue but that’s not really the case here.
Even on a good day, you might pass a handful of people. A couple of walkers, maybe someone with a dog, possibly a cyclist working their way up a hill.
Mostly, it’s just space and it gives you time to think, or not think at all.
Pubs at the Right Moment
A good walk is always improved by knowing there’s something waiting at the end of it.
Around here, that usually means a pub.
The Half Moon at Llanthony is a favourite for a reason. Proper food, a drink, somewhere to sit and feel like you’ve earned it.
Some people plan their walks around it. Others “accidentally” end up there.
Honestly, both approaches work.
It Suits All Sorts of Walkers
You don’t have to be climbing mountains to enjoy walking in Wales.
Some guests head up onto ridges like Hatterrall Ridge and spend hours out there. Others stick to the valley, take shorter routes, and stop often.
There’s no pressure to turn it into something big.
A slow wander can be just as good as a long hike and both are equally good for the soul.
Evenings Feel Better Afterwards
There’s something about coming back from a walk here that feels properly satisfying.
Boots off, fire lit, something warm to eat.
You notice it more because you’ve been outside. The contrast makes it.
Even sitting quietly feels earned in a way it doesn’t at home.
Walking That Stays With You
People don’t always remember the exact route they took but they do remember the feeling of it. The quiet and the views. The sense of having a bit more space in their head than when they arrived.
That’s what walking in Wales tends to do.
And it’s why so many people come back and do it all over again.
If You Fancy a Walk
You don’t need much.
Good shoes, something waterproof (come on, it’s Wales!), and a bit of time.
The rest is already here.
