Spring in Wales | What’s Growing in Llanthony in April

spring in wales

There is a very particular point in the year when the valley stops hinting at spring and properly commits to it.

Late April is that moment.

The grass has gone from pale to properly green. Trees that looked bare a few weeks ago are now filling out with fresh leaves and the air feels calmer. Even the sheep seem a little more relaxed about things now that lambing is (almost!) over.

Here at Llanthony Castaway, you can almost see the landscape changing day by day.

The Grass Is Back (and the Sheep Are Delighted)

After the slower months, the grass returns with enthusiasm.

Fields that looked tired through winter suddenly feel full again. The colour deepens, and the hills take on that bright green that Wales does so well.

The sheep are very happy about it. They spread themselves across the fields and get on with the important business of grazing, occasionally interrupted by lambs charging about with far too much energy (I love that little wiggly jump that they do!)

Lambs Everywhere

By late April, the lambs are no longer new arrivals.

They have found their feet and then some.

This is the stage where they start to test their legs properly. You will see them racing across the fields, leaping in unexpected directions, and gathering in little groups that seem to have no particular plan.

I love this season.

Trees Coming Back to Life

The hedgerows and trees around Llanthony are quietly filling out.

Fresh leaves appear almost overnight, turning branches from bare lines into soft green shapes. The woods feel fuller, the lanes feel more sheltered, and everything starts to look just a little more alive.

It is a lovely time for walking, with just enough cover to feel enclosed without losing the wide views across the hills.

Wildflowers Starting to Appear

Along the lanes and in the fields, the first wildflowers begin to show.

You will spot them as you walk. Small bursts of colour that brighten the edges of paths and hedgerows. Daffodils are still lingering in places, though now they are joined by other spring flowers beginning to take their turn.

It is not quite summer in full colour yet but it definitely feels like the beginning of it.

Longer Days, Slower Evenings

One of the nicest changes in late April is the light.

Evenings stretch out a little longer, which means more time outside. Guests tend to light the firepit later, sit out for longer, and make the most of the beautiful, lighter evenings.

There is a gentle ease to this time of year. No rush to get inside and no need to fill the day with plans if you don’t want to.

Walking the Valley in Spring

Spring is one of the best times to explore the Black Mountains and the Llanthony Valley (and one of my favourite times to explore!)

The ground has started to dry out, the air feels fresh rather than cold, and the landscape has that sense of renewal that makes walking feel easy.

A simple walk down to Llanthony Priory feels different at this time of year. The surrounding fields are greener, the trees fuller, and the whole setting feels quietly alive.

A Good Time to Visit Wales

For anyone thinking about a spring getaway in Wales, late April is a lovely moment to come.

You catch the valley just as it wakes up properly. Everything feels fresh, not crowded or rushed, just gently moving into the next season.

At Llanthony Castaway, it is one of those times when the landscape does most of the work for you. All you really need to do is step outside and notice it.
