Fun Facts About Farming, Nature & Wildlife in Llanthony
Nestled deep in the Black Mountains of Wales, the Llanthony Valley is not just home to Castaway, it’s home to a remarkable cast of wild and woolly characters, from red kites circling the skies to mischievous sheep with minds of their own.
If you’re dreaming of a nature-filled countryside escape, here are a few fun facts to give you a taste of the land before you visit.
🐑 1. Sheep Outnumber People (By a Lot)
It’s no secret: Wales is sheep country. But did you know that sheep outnumber people here by almost 3 to 1? In Llanthony, it often feels like even more, especially when they turn up in the garden, on the track, or blocking the gate just because they can.
Here on the farm, we keep a small flock of sheep who live rather contented lives munching through the meadows – though they do like to give us a runaround come shearing time.
🦅 2. Red Kites Are the Sky Kings
If you look up on a clear day, you’ll likely spot a red kite or two (or ten) circling high above the valley. Once almost extinct in the UK, they’ve made a brilliant comeback and are now one of the most iconic birds in our skies.
You’ll know them by their forked tails and elegant, looping flight. They’re not just beautiful, they’re expert scavengers too (so keep an eye on your picnic).
🌿 3. Our Fields Are Full of Wild Medicinals
From wild garlic and yarrow to meadowsweet and nettles, our hedgerows and fields are full of plants that have been used for centuries for their healing properties.
Even if you’re not a forager, you’ll feel the benefits of simply walking among them. It’s nature’s own aromatherapy, right on your doorstep.
🦡 4. Badgers & Foxes Rule the Night
While the days belong to sheep and birds, the nights are owned by badgers and foxes. You probably won’t see them though because they’re shy, but you might catch the flash of a brush tail, the rustle of grass, or the occasional fox bark echoing across the hills.
Bring a torch, tread softly, and you just might catch a glimpse.
🐾 5. Dogs Are Welcome But the Sheep Make the Rules
At Castaway, we love dogs. But our sheep… not so much. If you’re bringing your four-legged friend, we ask that they stay on lead around the fields and livestock. (The sheep have made their preferences quite clear.)
That said, there are plenty of wild tracks and wooded paths where your pup can roam free, and you’ll both sleep well after a full day exploring.
