Public Transport: How to Reach Llanthony Castaway Without a Car
Looking to escape the busy world without having to drive? Llanthony Castaway may feel remote, but it is surprisingly easy to reach by public transport. And if you are staying in our Railway Carriage, a converted goods wagon, then arriving by train feels especially fitting. You really can take a train to stay in a train.
This guide explains how to reach us without a car, including taxis, walking options, and support for long-distance walkers.
Step 1: Travel by Train to Abergavenny
The nearest railway station is Abergavenny, which connects to many major cities. It’s a great option for guests looking to enjoy a car-free countryside break.
Approximate journey times:
From London Paddington: around 2.5 hours (via Newport)
From Bristol Temple Meads: about 1 hour
From Cardiff Central: 40 minutes
From Manchester Piccadilly: just under 3 hours
You can check train times and book tickets through National Rail or Transport for Wales.
Step 2: Book a Taxi from Abergavenny to Llanthony Castaway
Once you arrive at Abergavenny, the easiest way to reach us is by taxi. The journey takes around 25 to 30 minutes and brings you right into the heart of the Black Mountains.
As this is a rural area, taxis must be booked in advance. Here are some local firms we recommend:
Tidley Taxis – 01873 854 358
Sheila’s Cabs – 07974 327 559
Julian’s Taxis – 01873 737 737
Terry’s Taxis – 07855 342 760
Sam’s Taxis – 01873 857 711
When you book, ask to be dropped off just before Llanthony Priory, I will provide more details directions to give when booking is complete
Step 3: Baggage Transfers for Walkers
If you are walking the Beacons Way or Offa’s Dyke Path, you can use a baggage transfer service to lighten the load.
We recommend Walklite Baggage Transfer, who will collect and deliver your bags between overnight stops. This lets you enjoy your walking holiday through the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park without carrying everything yourself.
Once You Arrive
Llanthony Castaway is within walking distance of two welcoming local pubs, perfect after a day of travel or walking.
- Llanthony Priory Bar & Restaurant – a unique cellar bar located beneath the historic priory ruins, and run by my sister Annabel & her husband Jamie
- The Half Moon Inn – a relaxed and traditional country pub
You can also explore the local footpaths, enjoy peaceful surroundings, and settle into the rhythm of valley life.
Why Choose Public Transport?
Travelling without a car can be a refreshing way to begin your stay. It allows you to:
Unwind before you even arrive
Reduce your environmental impact
Let someone else navigate the winding mountain lanes
It also fits with the values we hold dear at Llanthony Castaway: slower living, deeper connection, and giving yourself space to breathe.
